As there have now been confirmed cases of the coronavirus (COVID 19) in Georgia, many parents are asking questions about how to best protect their children and prevent the spread of virus. We at Atlanta Children’s Therapy understand your concern. As the safety and wellbeing of your children is also our number one priority, we would like to provide you with some information on the virus and steps that can be taken to keep your family safe.

Protecting Your Family

Here are some simple steps you can take to lower the risk of you and your family catching or

spreading the illness according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

  • Wash hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds. If soap and water are not available, then use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer
  • Stay up to date on vaccinations, including the influenza vaccine
  • Avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth
  • Cover your cough or sneeze with a tissue, then throw the tissue in the trash
  • Wash your hands after touching tissues
  • Clean and disinfect frequently touched objects and areas
  • Avoid close contact with people who are sick
  • Avoid contact with others when you are sick

Masks

The CDC does NOT recommend people who are healthy to wear a facemask to protect themselves from coronavirus. Facemasks should be worn by individuals who show symptoms of the virus to help avoid spreading the disease to others and by healthcare workers in hospitals.

Symptoms of Coronavirus (COVID 19)

The symptoms of COVID 19 infection are similar to those of a lower respiratory infection. They include:

  • Difficulty breathing
  • Shortness of breath from continued coughing
  • Refusing liquids with decreased urine frequency
  • Crying without ability to be consoled
  • Fever that is not responsive to fever reducing medications

If you are concerned that your child has any of these symptoms, call your child’s pediatrician or clinic immediately prior to visiting an office or facility. Most children with COIVD infections have mild symptoms and do not require medical care. There is no evidence that children are more susceptible to this corona virus. In fact, according to the CDC most confirmed cases globally have occurred in adults. However, call your child’s pediatrician if you are concerned.
